Oh Come To The Church In Toledo
Chorus:
Oh come to the church in Toledo,
That little white church on the hill,
Where the Lord watches o'er his family,
And we'll continue to grow, yes we will.
Verse 1:
We started in an old log schoolhouse,
In eighteen hundred forty-two,
Brother Suggett and eleven faithful followers,
Met to form a Baptist church and it grew.
Verse 2:
It grew until they had to build a church house,
In 1848 put up the walls,
Atop a hill in the Kingdom of Callaway,
And God's followers begin to fill it's halls.
Verse 3:
We've had many shepherds in our history,
Thirty-nine since Suggett heard the call,
Some were learned Bible scholars, some were laymen,
But here at Unity we've loved them all.
Verse 4:
Some families have been here over a century,
Some moved into our neighborhood and come,
But together through the years we've formed a family,
Guess that's how Unity got its name.
Verse 5:
We've had a few events back in our past here,
Worth mentioning in song, and so we will,
Jesse James was said to lead a singing school one time,
In this little church on the hill.
Verse 6:
We organized and started a Sunday School,
Helped other churches form along the way,
Baptized new believers and did God's work,
Things were not much different from today.
Verse 7:
We've weathered several storms in our history,
Several wars and a Great Depression came,
But we remained here despite all the turmoil,
And clung steadfastly to our name.
Verse 8:
For one hundred fifty years now we've been standing.
Waiting for the Lord to come again.
We're happy and we're faithful here at Unity,
As we look back over where we've been.
Verse 9:
Brother Ball now shepherds the flock here,
We're so glad he answered our call,
Many hands do their work and continue on,
So the tradition of Unity won't fall.
Verse 10:
We're glad to have you all here to celebrate,
One hundred fifty years of Unity,
And we pray that till God comes for his children,
That our church will continue to be.
Note: This song is sung to the tune of
"Church in the Wildwood"
Written to commemorate the
sesquicentennial celebration at Unity Baptist Church,
October 2-4, 1992.
