Newspaper Index

The Callaway County Public Library has maintained a newspaper-clipping file for many years. Librarians clipped articles about local people, places, and events and filed them under general subject headings.

The clipping files were popular and useful, but they had certain limitations. Searching through the files could be tedious and time consuming. Researchers sometimes misfiled clippings. Also, since newsprint deteriorates with time and with handling, some of the clippings had darkened and were almost unreadable.

Several years ago, the library began buying copies of Callaway County Newspapers on microfilm. Two microfilm reader/printers were also purchased to make it possible to view and print articles. Researchers using this equipment can find articles about any historic event if the date of the event can be determined.

Librarians began to index files from the newspaper clipping cabinets in the fall of 2004. Researchers can quickly find the correct date of many articles with this index. This is an ongoing project and is far from complete. Click on the links at the top of the page to begin exploring.

The Callaway County Public Library has the following newspapers on microfilm. Most are also available at the Missouri State Historical Society Library. Recent articles may be found online by searching the Fulton Sun website.
