Callaway Amateur Radio League operators Gary Blakley, left, and Richard White visit with other hobbyists around the world on March 4, 2006. A temporary station was set up at Westminster College to commemorate the 60th Anniversary of Winston Churchill's visit to Fulton, Mo.

Assigned a special call sign for the event by the Federal Communications Commission, more than a dozen operators set up a temporary station on the Westminster College campus and talked with ham-radio hobbyists all over the world.

The call sign was W-zero-C which represented Winston Churchill and Westminster College. Read the full story in the Fulton Sun.

A Little History of the Club

During the first part of 1978 several amateur radio operators net informally. On October 12, 1978 CARL was formed. Fifteen local hams met in the meeting room of the Fulton State Hospital. The radio club was off and running. First President was Wally Bloss WB0BAV, Vice-President was Jim Potter KS0B, Secretary/Treasurer was Patsy Blakely KA0CYF. Carol Rossen WB0WLU named the club.

For several years monthly meeting were held in various members homes. As the club grew meeting were changed to the Callaway Electric Cooperative Building. We meet once a month on the second Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. A net is held each Wednesday at 8:45 p.m. local time except for meeting night. Different members call the net each month.

The club has run two previous special events stations. The first was in honor of the visit of Mikhall Gorbachev to Fulton on May 6, 1992. We celebrated the 50th anniversary of Sir Winston Churchill's Iron Curtain Speech on March 9, 1996. A club station was also set up to work with the Special Treatment Unit School until space was no longer available.

In 1999 we were the proud recipients of a 150 foot free standing tower. It is now at home just south of I-70 at Calwood, the Callaway town known as "the crossroads of the world." It is equipped with several antenna at this time. Much hard work and cooperation went into making this the success that it is and will be for the future of amateur communication.
