JEPTHA YATES

JEPTHA YATES, section 30, township 49, range 8, was born in Shelby county, Kentucky, August 2, 1816. His parents, Benjamin Yates and wife, with the family, came to Missouri about 1837. Jeptha was married in 1838, to Miss Eliza J., daughter of Thomas Harrison, born on the farm on Harrison's Branch, July 22, 1819. In 1840 he secured a tract of land upon which he still lives, and which now contains 240 acres. He also owns other property, 340 acres in all. He has been a fair farmer, handling as much stock as his farm would support.

In 1850 he went to California and engaged in mining for about one year, when he returned to his farm.

His family has consisted of three children, viz.: John Thomas, Mary Elizabeth, and Lucy Jane, married to Samuel H. Price. Mary E. is the widow of William T. Fullington, a resident of Chariton county, who died about nine years ago. She now lives with her father. She has four children, viz., Mary Jane, widow of Peter Kemp, living with her mother; Laura, wife of Thomas Kemp; Elderly and William Everett. Mr. Yates' wife died September 21, 1873. He is an old Ironside Baptist, and has taken an active interest in that denomination for some years. John T. was born August 15, 1839, at the Harrison farm, and lived with his father until 1859, when he went to Pike's Peak, returning in six months.In September, 1861, he entered the service of the State at Williamsburg, in Whitton's battalion of Harris's division, remaining six months, when he engaged in the stock business in Illinois county and in Wisconsin. Returning home in June, 1865, he went to farming, and November 22, married Miss Mary F., daughter of Alfred Gooldy. They have two children: Alice Virginia and Althea Jane, twins, born August 29, 1877. His farm contains 180 acres, adjoining his father's farm, and he is engaged principally in handling stock, including all kinds which can be raised on his farm. Mr. Y. is a Mason and a member of Fulton and Orion and Crusade Commandery of Mexico. His wife is a member of the Methodist church.
