HENRY M. THOMAS, another of the many and industrious farmers of Cedar township, was born in Monroe county, Missouri, in 1840, and was a son of William Thomas, a native of North Carolina, and Amanda (Wood) Thomas, who came originally from Kentucky. They were married in the Blue Grass State, and came to Missouri in 1838, first locating in Monroe county, but four years afterwards they removed to Callaway county, where they still reside. They had a family of seven children: Joseph H., Ruthy A., Jane Frances, James F., William P., Henry M. and John H. The father has always followed farming, and to this occupation his sons were brought up. Henry M., on reaching manhood engaged in farming for himself, and has since followed it. In 1865 he was married to Miss Nancy J. Madden, a native of Boone county, Missouri, and daughter of William and Jennie (Yount) Madden, originally of Tennessee. They have five children: Mattie A., born December 3, 1866; Dora C., born July 8, 1871; Nancy H., born September 8, 1876; Gracie A., born February 16, 1879, and Arthur, born November 1, 1881.

In 1862 Mr. Thomas enlisted in the 9th Missouri cavalry, United States army, and served three years and seven months, being honorably discharged after the close of the war. He participated in a number of regular engagements, and fights of less importance almost without number. During the service he contracted the measles, and on account of the exposures and hardships to which he was exposed, his health was permanently injured, so that ever since he has been disabled from severe manual labor. Believing that if any ex-soldier of the Union is entitled to a pension he justly is, he has made application to the Government to be placed on the pension roll, and he has every reason to believe his request will be complied with. Mr. Thomas is an energetic, industrious farmer and a good citizen, and is well respected by all who know him.
