Noah F. Sneathen, a thrifty farmer and well respected citizen of Cote Sans Dessein
township, is of Pennsylvania-German descent on his father's side, but the family
has long been settled in this country. His father, Abram Sneathen, born in Pennsylvania,
near Pitttsburg, December 13, 1803, was reared in his State, and lived there
until he was thirty years of age. He came to Missouri and located in Montgomery
County, where he practived medicine. In Montgomery he met, and in 1839 was married
to, Miss Malinda Howard, formerly of Kentucky, born September 10, 1807. They
reared four children, and one besides, the eldest, died in tender years. The
others were Noah F., the subject of the present sketch; Rueben R. who died in
1878, aged thirty-two; Hester A., (Mrs. Thompson) now of Arkansas, and Joseph
C., now public administrator of Benton County, Missouri. In 1857 the parents
removed to Callaway County, where they lived until their deaths, and where Dr.
Sneathen continued the practice of medicine, and also carried on a farm. He
died July 8, 1878. His wife preceded him to the grave four years, dying November
24, 1874. Dr. Sneathen was a successful physician and a highly respected citizen.
His wife was a lady of many of the better qualities of head and heart, and was
a devoted wife and mother and an estimable neighbor.
Noah F. Sneathen, their eldest living son, was born in Montgomery County, Missouri, on the 17th of April, 1843, and was reared on his father's farm in that county. During the war, Noah Sneathen took the side of the Union, and on the 12th of February, 1862, enlisted in Company I, 4th Missouri State Miltia Cavalry, at Jefferson City, ans served for three years. After the war Mr. Sneathen engaged in farming in Callaway County, which he has since followed and with substantial success.
On the 27th of July, 1865, he was married to Miss Lizzie Neas, of Benton County, Missouri, born June 26, 1845, and a daughter of Samuel and Margaret Neas, of that county, both now deceased, her mother dying September 3, 1878, and her father January 1, 1883. Mr. and Mrs. Sneathen have six children: Samuel, Bejamin F., Joseph J., Robert A., Florence A., and Hannah A. There are five deceased: Alice P., George E., Charles M., Elva A., and Horace D., all of whom died in tender years.
Mr. Sneathen has a good farm of 160 acres of land, substantially
improved. He raises grain principally, but also has some stock. He is an industrious,
energetic farmer, and a good manager of his farm and business affairs.
