DR. ISAAC H. RUTLEDGE, physician and farmer. Dr. I. H. Rutledge, who was born in Jacksonville, Illinois, May 17, 1839, and was a son of Andrew H. Rutledge and wife, Nancy A. Barber, comes of the Tennessee branch of the distinguished Rutledge family of South Carolina, of which John Rutledge, Sr., President and afterwards Governor of South Carolina, was a representative; as were also Edward Rutledge, Governor of that State, and signer of the Declaration of Independence, and John Rutledge, Jr., a distinguished member of Congress from South Carolina. Andrew H. Rutledge, however, the father of the Doctor, was a native of Tennessee, to which State his parents had removed from South Carolina in an early day. The Doctor's mother was from North Carolina, but her family also was originally from the Palmetto State, and has furnished distinguished representatives in the public affairs of the county. Andrew H. Rutledge and wife had eight children: Isaac H., Sarah E., James J., Mary J., John N., Matilda A. and two died in infancy. In an early day Andrew H. Rutledge removed to Jacksonville, Morgan county, Illinois. He was engaged in merchandising for many years in McDonough county, Illinois. In 1839 he removed with his family to Adams county, Illinois, and in 1871 settled permanently in Callaway county, Missouri.
Doctor Rutledge was reared in Quincy and received a superior general education in the excellent schools of that city. His medical education was acquired at Quincy, Illinois, where he took a three years' thorough course of study, after which he attended lectures in St. Louis and engaged in the practice. Doctor Rutledge has been engaged in the practice of medicine in Callaway county for nearly ten years and has established a wide and enviable reputation in this county as a skilful and successful physician. He enjoys a good practice, having the confidence of the whole community, and he is highly respected and esteemed as a citizen and neighbor. He also has a neat farm, the working and management of which he superintends.
The Doctor has been twice married; to his first wife, formerly Miss Sophronia
H. Moore, he was married December 7, 1859. She died in 1874, leaving three children:
William F., Anna E., now deceased, Rosa B., also now deceased, John T. and Mary
A. On the 11th of September, 1879, the Doctor was married to his present wife,
Mrs. Sarah W., widow of the late John Greene. There was one child by his second
marriage, James H., who has since died. The Doctor's first wife was a daughter
of Samuel Moore, a native of Pennsylvania and a soldier in the War of 1812,
who lived to the age of seventy-three. The Doctor is a deacon of the Baptist
church.
