ALFRED D. OFFUTT, M. D., a leading physician of this part of the county, and a representative of one of the oldest and best families in the county, is a native of Fairfax county, Virginia, born April 5, 1833, and was a son of Eli R. Offutt and wife, whose maiden name was Margaret Washington, a distant relative to General George Washington.
Dr. Offutt’s father was a man of means, and quite prominent in Fairfax county. He was quartermaster in the army during the War of 1812, and by profession was a surveyor. He surveyed nearly the whole of Fairfax county, and held various official positions in that county. In 1836 he came out to Callaway county, Missouri, and entered and bought a large body of land—about 1,000 acres—and improved a farm. The following year he brought his family out and lived here until his death, which occurred in 1863. He was a successful farmer and stock raiser, and was highly esteemed by all his acquaintances.
Dr. Offutt grew up in this county on his father’s farm and received his education in the public schools and at Westminster College. In 1855 he began the study of medicine under Drs. Milton & Adams, at Danville, the leading physicians of Montgomery county, Missouri. Following this he took a regular course in the Missouri Medical College at St. Louis, from which he graduated with honor in the spring of 1859. Immediately after his graduation Dr. Offutt began the practice of medicine in this county and continued it without interruption, having charge the last two years of Dr. Brown’s practice; but on the account of ill health, resulting from the hardships and exposures of the practice, he was compelled to discontinue it for some ten years. During this time, however, he attended to Dr. McCulock’s practice for two falls. Sufficiently restored in health to resume the practice in 1878, he came to Readsville and entered actively upon his professional duties.
He has rapidly acquired an extensive clientele, and has a lucrative practice.
Dr. Offutt stands very high among brother physicians as a skilful, successful
practitioner, and as an honorable member of the profession, and among the people
he is justly popular. He is a prominent member of the A.F. and A. M. Dr. Offutt
has never been married.
