REV. WILLIAM H. MARQUESS, minister of the Presbyterian church. Mr. Marquess is a native of Tennessee and was born February 22, 1854. His parents removed to Mississippi when he was quite young, and from that State he came to Missouri at the age of seventeen. At a comparatively early age he became a member of the Presbyterian church, and in order to qualify himself thoroughly for his life-work he entered upon a regular course of college training, becoming a matriculate in Westminster College, of Fulton, Missouri, in which he continued as a student until his graduation in 1873. While at college he determined to devote himself to the ministry. After his graduation he entered vigorously upon a regular course of studies for the ministry, and in April, 1878, was duly ordained a minister of the Presbyterian church. Following this he preached two years at Keytesville, Missouri, and then accepted a call to the pastorate of the church at this city.

On the 7th of October, 1880, Mr. Marquess was married to Miss Maggie A. Buckner, of Mexico, Missouri, an amiable and accomplished daughter of Judge Buckner, of that city, member of Congress from this State for the past ten years. Mr. Marquess has the reputation of being one of the most talented ministers among the younger members of the clergy in this section of the State. He is an accomplished scholar and earnest and zealous in the sacred cause, and a fluent, animated speaker. He commands the closest attention in the pulpit and often rises to a height of eloquence, to which but few public speakers approach. He is a man of a wide and deep range of thought and of sincere piety, and his ministry is one of more than ordinary success.
