THOMAS H. HALLEY, county surveyor, was born in Bedford county, Virginia, June 1, 1829. His father, Henry Halley, was a native of Virginia, and his mother a native of Maryland. Mr. H. grew to manhood in his native county, spending his youth mainly on his father's farm and clerking in a store. He acquired a good education in the schools of his neighborhood, which included with it a mastery of the regular English branches with surveying and mathematics.
In 1852 he removed to Missouri and located in Callaway county. After coming to this State he engaged in teaching, which he continued without intermission four years, and afterwards taught in the winter months up to the year 1871. In 1872, he was elected county surveyor, and since that time has been continuously re-elected at the expiration of each term.
He was married in Virginia in December, 1850, to Miss Fanny, daughter of Mr.
Charles Craghead, by whom he had one daughter, Fanny, now the wife of Mr. P.
F. Smith, of Callaway county. His first wife died in February, 1852, and in
February, 1854, he married Miss Milly, daughter of Mr. John Craghead, formerly
of Virginia. Miss Craghead was born in Virginia and reared in Callaway county.
By this marriage he has eight children, viz.: Henry D., John J., Georgia, Charles
R., Thomas H., Samuel, Norman G. and Tully C. Directly after his second marriage
Mr. Halley located on the farm where he now resides, in Calwood township. The
farm contains 280 acres of land, of which 175 acres are fenced and under a good
state of cultivation. The improvements include a good two-story residence, five
or six tobacco barns, and all the other buildings required on a first-class
farm. Mr. and Mrs. Halley and four of their children are members of the Missionary
Baptist church, and he is also a member of the I.O.O.F.
