SAMUEL N. GUTHRIE, farmer and stock raiser. Mr. Guthrie, a substantial farmer
of this county, and one of the well respected citizens of Caldwell township,
is a native of the county, born on the 8th of September, 1829, and was a son
of Samuel T. Guthrie and wife, Sally Phillips, who were married on the 27th
of December, 1821. They were both from Kentucky, the father born in Madison
county in 1793, and the mother in Casey county in 1804.The former came to Callaway
county in 1819, was married, and the year after their marriage they settled
on the present site of the town of Guthrie. The father became a prominent citizen
of this county, and died in the respect and esteem of all who knew him, on the
24th of April, 1872. He and his good wife were blessed with a large family of
children, fourteen in number, and of these eight are still living.
Samuel N., one of their eight sons, and subject of the present sketch, engaged in farming for himself on reaching manhood, and having been brought up to habits of industry and to principles of honor and integrity by his worthy parents, he has naturally become a successful farmer and useful citizen. He raises annually about sixty-five or seventy acres of grain, and raises considerable stock, including cattle, hogs, sheep, and so forth. He has some very fine sheep, the raising of which he [is] now making a specialty.
Mr. Guthrie has been married twice. His first wife, whose maiden name was Ann
S. Nichols, a daughter of Felix G. and Elizabeth A. Nichols, died on the 13th
of June, 1869. She left three children: Finis W., now a resident of Los Angeles
county, California; Samuel B., of this county; and Churchill P. Two, besides,
are deceased: Felix E. and James E. On the 16th of May, 1871, Mr. Guthrie was
married to his present wife, formerly Miss Lydia E. Mirts, of this county. There
are two children by this union: Jessie M. and John W. Both Mr. and Mrs. G. are
members of the Cumberland Presbyterian church, in which Mr. Guthrie has been
an elder for many years.
