Colonel Gibson, a leading farmer and influential citizen of Auxvasse township,
is one of the oldest native residents of the county. He was born here on the
4th of January, 1823, and has resided in the county continuously ever since,
now about sixty-one years.
He was a son of Captain John Gibson a gallant soldier of two wars and one of the pioneer settlers of the county. The father was a native of North Carolina, but subsequently removed to South Carolina, then to Tennessee, and from that State to Missouri in 1807. This State was them an almost trackless wilderness, and St. Louis was only a small village of a few hundred traders. In the War of 1812 he was captain of a company from this State, and in the Black Hawk War was lieutenant of a company. He was married after the War of 1812 to Miss Rebecca Patton, originally of Madison county, Kentucky. In 1817 he settled on the farm, where his son Colonel Gibson now lives. He became a very successful farmer and stock raiser, and at one time owned nearly 2,000 acres of land. Captain Gibson died on his farm in this county 9n the 20th of May, 1869, universally regretted.
Colonel Gibson, or Marshall, as he was then called, was reared on his father’s
farm, and on the 4th of May, 1852, was married to Miss Mary C., a daughter of
James and Sally Wren, originally of Fairfax county, Virginia. Farming and stock-raising
have been Colonel Gibson’s occupation from boyhood, and in this he has
been very successful. He now owns about 1,800 acres of land, with some 560 acres
in cultivation. His farm is comfortably and substantially improved, and is one
of the choice farms of the township. Colonel Gibson was an officer of militia
before the late war and has always occupied a prominent position as a citizen
in this township. He is regarded as one of the leading men of this section of
the county. Colonel and Mrs. Gibson have six children: Laura A., Lillie R.,
Walter Lee, Mahala L., John M., James W. Four are deceased; Sallie R., wife
of Jno. Gilliam, died in March, 1882; two died in infancy and one at the age
of thirteen. Colonel Gibson is [a] member of Portland Lodge, A. F. and A. M.
