A. R. FANT (DECEASED). Mr. Fant a highly respected and successful citizen of
Callaway county who died on the 15th of May, 1883, was a native of Kentucky,
and was born on the 9th of March, 1809. He therefore lived to the ripe age of
seventy-four, four years more than the allotted life of three-score and ten.
He became one of the early settlers of Callaway county, and his life was identified
with this county until his death.
On the 6th of September, 1836, he was married to Miss Harriet Snell, but she died some five years afterwards on the 3d of May, 1842. She left him two children: May B., born April 15, 1838, now Mrs. Hord, a resident of Mexico, Missouri; and Hattie A., born March 1, 1841, now Mrs. Herndon, a resident of Fulton, Missouri.
On the 26th of September, 1843, Mr. Fant was married to Miss Susan H. Snell originally of Kentucky, born in Georgetown, on the 15th day of April, 1818. She still survives him, a motherly and true-hearted [sic] old lady, held in the highest esteem by her neighbors and friends and by all who know her. She and her lamented husband spent a happy married life of nearly forty years together, but at last the messenger of death came and called away the devoted husband to his home “not made with hands, eternal in the heavens.”
He had long been an earnest and faithful member of the church, a devoted follower
of Him from whom the assurance come—“Blessed are the dead who die
in the Lord.” He was a man the purity and blamelessness of whose whole
life beautifully illustrated the influence of the Christian religion upon the
minds and hears of those who follow after its noble teachings. As a neighbor
and citizen he endeared himself to all who knew him, and as a husband and father
he was loved with singular devotion. Having run the full course of an earthly
career, he died the death of a devoted and confiding Christian and entered upon
a higher and better life, where death nor partings of loved ones shall never
enter.
