JOSEPH H. EVERHEART, a thrifty young farmer of Nine Mile Prairie, was born on his father’s homestead in this county on the 8th of September, 1847. He was reared on the farm and educated in the common schools. In 1864, then in his seventeenth year, while General Price was in this State on his last campaign, he joined his command at Arrow Rock, becoming a member of Captain Scholl’s company, under General Shelby. Afterwards in Arkansas, at Camp McGruder, he was attached to the infantry, and took part in all the battles in which his command participated during the remainder of the war, except the one at Camden, nor was he in the Banks campaign. He surrendered with General Kirby Smith in May, 1865.

Returning after the war, he worked on the farm for his father, until he was twenty years of age, and then continued there farming for himself two years. About this time, November 4, 1869, he was married to Miss Anna Brodwater, a daughter of J. C. H. and Caroline E. (Jackson) Brodwater, who now reside in Montgomery City. Mrs. Everheart was born near Readsville, November 23, 1850. Her father ran the Kedwell and Brodwater mill at Whetstone some fifteen years. He then moved to New Florence, (where she was married) and afterwards to Montgomery City. She has one brother, Guy, at Fulton. Mr. and Mrs. Everheart have four children: Kate, Elmer, Guy and Lena. Mrs. Everheart is a member of the M. E. church. In 1870 Mr. Everheart located on his present neat farm here of 120 acres with 100 more near by. He is engaged in general farming and raises some stock, and is accounted one of the enterprising young farmers of the county.
