GEORGE W. DAVIS, grocer and a substantial citizen of Cedar City, came to this
place from Washington, in Franklin county, in 1879, and engaged in business
here. Since then he has built up an excellent trade and keeps constantly on
hand a well selected stock of goods in his line.
Mr. Davis was born in Franklin county, Missouri, in 1849, and was a son of Garrett Davis, of Kentucky, a cousin to the Hon. Garrett Davis, United States Senator, who, in the history of the Blue Grass State, stands second in fame as a statesman to the great Harry of the West only—Henry Clay. Hon. Garrett Davis’ brother, Amos Davis, was also a distinguished member of Congress from Kentucky, and died suddenly after a great speech in Owensville, Kentucky; and related to the same family, as is well known, is ex-President Davis of the Southern Confederacy, who was born in Christian county, Kentucky, June 3, 1808, and for profound, cultured, Cassius-like statesmanship, is perhaps without a superior in the whole history of American politics.
Garrett Davis, the father of George W., came to Missouri early in life, and was afterwards married here to Miss Eva Shookman, who was born and reared in this State and was of English descent. Seven children were the fruits of their union: Eliza, Thomas H., Andrew J., Mary S., Margaret, Nancy A. and George W. Mr. George W. Davis was reared in Franklin county and received a very good common school education there, as he grew up. For some years before coming to Cedar City, he was engaged in merchandising with success in Washington, Franklin county. In 1879 he came to Cedar City, where he has since been engaged in the grocery business. Mr. Davis is well respected and popular, both personally and as a business man, and has a fair trade. In 1875 he was married to Miss Arthusa J. Shelton of Franklin county.
Mr. and Mrs. Davis have three children living: Harry A., Jesse H. and Ernest
R. Three besides are deceased. Mr. Davis owns valuable property in Cedar City,
including the business house which he occupies with his grocery store. He belongs
to no secret order and is Democratic in politics.
