JOSEPH W. COONS, farmer and stock raiser. In 1824, Joseph Coons, pere, and
Lucretia Dalzell, both natives of Kentucky, were married in that State and eleven
years afterwards came to Missouri and settled in Bourbon township, of Callaway
county, where they lived until their deaths. He died in October, 1843, aged
forty-three, having been born in 1800. She died in 1870, aged sixty-five, having
been born in 1805. He was a minister of the Christian denomination and a farmer.
He preached in Kentucky, prior to coming to Missouri, and preached in Callaway
county afterwards until his death. He was one of the pioneer ministers of the
Christian denomination in Callaway county, and was an earnest, devoted servant
of the Lord. Joseph W. Coons, the subject of this sketch, was born the year
following his parents' removal to this county, on the 30th of January, 1836.
He was reared on a farm and educated in the common schools. After he grew up
he was married to Miss Anna D. Duncan, a daughter of John and Sally Duncan of
this county, but originally of Kentucky. They have four children: Wallace D.,
Sallie L., Nettie C. and Hiram J. Mr. Coons first lived on a farm consisting
of a part of the old family homestead, but in 1875 he sold that and bought his
present place which contains 200 acres. He makes a specialty of raising mules,
cattle, hogs etc., for the markets, and is one of the successful, enterprising
farmers of Bourbon township. Mrs. Coons is a member of the Millersburg Christian
Church, and he is a member of the A.F. and A. M.
