THADDEUS COLLARD, merchant. James Collard, the father of Thaddeus, came from Kentucky to Missouri in its early days and settled in Lincoln county. His wife, Mary Barker, daughter of John Barker, was originally from North Carolina. They had a family of nine children: John, Felix, Harriet, Mary, James, Thaddeus, Amanda, Oscar and Jane. Seven of these lived to be grown. Both parents died while most of their children were quite young, and the seven children who survived them were left on the farm in the log cabin where their parents had died, to make their way in the world as best they could. But they all staid [sic] together, the older caring for the younger ones and all helping to carry on the farm, until one by one they grew up and married and established homes for themselves.
Thaddeus, as he grew up, succeeded by study at home and close application in
occasional schools he attended, in acquiring a fair, ordinary education, sufficient
for all the practical affairs of life. In 1849 he was married to Miss Lucinda
Cantrell, of Lincoln county, and this union has proved a long and happy one.
Twelve children have blessed their married lives: Amanda F., Frances M., Cynthia
A., Mary, James D., John P., Felix, Lenna Wirt, Dollie B. and Thomas Frederick.
Two died in tender years. Mr. Collard has been a resident of Callaway county
for a number of years, and is one of the substantial, well respected business
men of Cedar City.
