MARTHA E. BOULWARE

MRS. MARTHA E. BOULWARE. Mrs. Boulware was the daughter of Thomas Smith, one of the pioneer settlers of Missouri. He was a native of Virginia, but had removed to Kentucky with his parents in an early day, and came out to Missouri from that State when a young man, in 1800. He first located in St. Charles county, and there met and married Miss Polly Darst. She died a few years afterwards, leaving him one child, Sally, now the widow of the late John Coats, of Pettis county. One other, Miles, died in infancy. Mr. Smith subsequently married Miss Elizabeth Darst, a sister to his first wife. In 1818 he came to Callaway county, and settled at Smith's Landing (the landing taking its name from him), near St. Aubert, where he lived until his death. His second wife died leaving him a family of children, as follows: Burrell who subsequently died leaving a family; Laricy A., afterwards died, the wife of Jas. Moon; Mackey, now in Oregon; Marcena, now the widow of Mr. Green in Mexico; David, who died in early manhood; Nancy, died the wife of D. H. Cheatum; Bethel, died leaving a family; Martha E., the subject of this sketch; Cyrus C., died leaving a family; Hernly now in California; Epaphrocletus now resident of Monroe county; and Zenia died St. Aubert some years ago. Mr. Smith was twice afterwards married but without issue. He died in this county in 1852, in his eightieth year. Mrs. Boulware is the only one of his children now living in Callaway county.
On the 8th of August, 1838, she was married to Mr. Daniel R. Boulware,
and they settled in Richland. But he died four years afterwards, July 31, 1842,
leaving her two children, Cyrus W. and Martha D., but the latter died at the
age of five years. On the 11th of May, 1848, Mrs. Boulware was married to Stephen
J. Boulware, a brother to her first husband. They settled on the farm tow miles
north of Fulton, where Mrs. Boulware still resides. He died here Nov. 1, 1856,
at the age of forty-six, having been born March 1, 1810. Since his death Mrs.
Boulware has remained in widowhood, now nearly thirty years. By he second husband
Mrs. Boulware had five children: Thomas J., now one of the leading teachers
of the county; Jane C., now the wife of David Dunlap; Miss Martha, at home;
Stephen J., died at the age of twenty-one, and Nellie, now the wife of James
W. Bowles. Mr. Boulware, her second husband, had been previously married. His
first wife whose maiden name was Mary S. Ratekin, died July 24, 1847, leaving
him three children: James W., Mary L. (died at sixteen), and Theodoric C., now
a prominent physician of Butler, Missouri. Mrs. Boulware is a member of the
Baptist church, and a lady highly esteemed by all who know her.
