WILLIAM L. BITTNER, grocer, Calwood. Lewis Bittner, the father of William L. was a native of Germany, and, after coming over to this country, was married in Pennsylvania to Miss Maria Carroll, where the son, William L., was born on the 22d of August, 1837. In 1855, the parents removed to Clayton county, Iowa, where William L. grew to manhood. He was reared to a farm life and followed that in Iowa until 1863, when he came to Missouri and located at Fulton, in Callaway county.
Here, the following year, on the 16th of August, 1864, he was married to Mrs.
Amanda Natton, widow of the late Hugh Natton, of Warren county, and daughter
of Alfred and Sytha Fisher. At Fulton, Mr. Bittner engaged in the hotel business,
which he followed successfully for some time. In 1868, however, he removed to
Franklin county and engaged in farming, where he remained for five years. Returning
then to Callaway county, he continued the occupation of farming until March,
1882, when he engaged in the grocery business at Calwood. Mr. Bittner carries
a large and well selected stock of goods in his line and has an excellent trade.
He is an energetic business man, perfectly upright in his dealings with his
customers and is justly very popular. By her former marriage Mrs. Bittner reared
two daughters, Martha F. and Mary A., the wives respectively of J. T. and Milton
Breckenridge, the younger of the two, however, being now deceased. Mr. and Mrs.
B. are both members of the M. E. Church South, and both are highly esteemed
as neighbors and acquaintances.
