JOHN F. BETZ, farmer, was the fourth of five children of Abraham and Sally Betz (the mother a daughter of William Stewart), both natives of Virginia, and was born in Franklin county of the Old Dominion in 1821. The father died there a few years ago, at the advanced age of eighty. The other children were: Nancy, Polly, Rhody and William.
John F. grew up in his native county and followed farming there until 1858, when, having married in the meantime, he came to Missouri with his family and settled in Callaway county. Here his wife, formerly a Miss Julia A. Blankenship, died in 1864, leaving five children: Angeline, William, DeWitt, Abraham and Angemon. Subsequently, Mr. Betz was married to Miss Elizabeth Nichols, a maiden lady, and a daughter of John Fowler, formerly of Boone county. She was born in that county, May 8, 1825. Her parents were from Madison county, Kentucky.
By his second marriage, Mr. Betz has two children: John F., Jr. and Charles
W. His present wife has six children by her former marriage; Lucinda F., Mary
E., John Robert, Laura, George T. and James W. Mr. Betz is a member of the Missionary
Baptist Church, and his wife is a member of the Christian denomination. In this
county Mr. Betz has made farming his constant employment, and owns a good place
of 160 acres, a considerable portion of which is fenced and in cultivation.
He has an excellent orchard and other valuable improvements on his place. Mr.
B has served as school director several times, and is well respected in the
community.
