DR. LEWIS S. BARNES, a leading business man of this part of the county, is a native of Franklin county, Missouri, born July 27, 1840. And was a son of William and Matiessa (Callaway) Barnes, who were among the early settlers of that county. When Lewis S. was six years of age his parents removed to Washington county, where the father died four years afterwards. Lewis S., was reared on a farm and in youth received a good common school education.

When nineteen years of age he began the regular study of medicine under his uncle, Dr. L. H. Callaway, of Loutre Island, of the pioneer family whose name is now borne by the county in which Dr. Barnes resides. He applied himself with great diligence to his medical studies for several years, and acquired such a knowledge of the learning of the profession that he was strongly recommended for the practice by leading physicians, and in 1864 entered upon the active practice by his profession in Callaway and Montgomery counties. He continued it with excellent success for two years, but the hardships and exposures incident to country practice proved too severe for his physical constitution to bear, and his health was so affected that he had to give up his profession.

He then engaged in farming and followed it with success until 1875 when he began merchandising in Calwood, which he has since continued. He carries a large and excellent stock of general merchandise and commands a good trade. He is a man of pure character, generous impulses and accommodating disposition, and being an energetic, intelligent business man he is naturally very popular as a man and merchant. On the 11th of March, 1862, Dr. Barnes was married to Miss Mary L. Booth, daughter of William Booth, of this county. They have three children, Mary Emma, William H. and DeLorns C. The Doctor is a member of the I.O.O.F and has filled the chairs. He is postmaster at Calwood.
