VINCENT ARTHUR, a comfortable farmer of Round Prairie township, was born in
Pittsylvania county, Virginia, February 11, 1829, and when nine years of age
came to this county with his parents, William B. and Sally (Barber) Arthur,
who settled here in 1838. The father, born in 1783, died here in 1856. The mother,
born in 1793, died in this county in 1863. They had ten children: Denetta, Abner,
James, Elizabeth, John C., William, Mary, Sarah, Vincent and Catharine F. The
father was a successful tobacco raiser of this county, and both parents were
well respected as neighbors and members of the community.
Vincent, their youngest son, as were his brothers, was reared on the farm, and after he grew up farming became his permanent calling. This he has since followed and with satisfactory success. He owns a good place of 160 acres, nearly all of which is under fence and substantially improved. His stock are of good grades and he raises a surplus for sale every year. In 1862 he was married to Miss Nancy A., a daughter of Isaiah and Sally (Ross) Selby, of this county. Mr. and Mrs. Arthur have three children: Charles E., born July 13, 1863; Sally Maud, born December 16, 1868, and Alfred Isaih, born April 20, 1873.
In 1862, Mr. Arthur enlisted in Captain J. W. Miller’s company
for the Southern service, but the company was disbanded on account of the impossibility
of getting through the Federal lines, so that he was thus prevented from doing
any actual service for the South. Aside from a short time in prison, he was
not otherwise absent during the war. He sustained considerable loss of property,
however, having lost three slaves by the emancipation proclamation and some
fine stock by the “impressment” of the “truly loyal”
for their own private use. Mr. Arthur has held no office, except that of school
director, and desires none. He is an intelligent farmer and good neighbor, and
is well esteemed by those around him.
